Shop Vinton County! If you are looking for places to find that special gift, try these Vinton County shops on for size!

A number of delightful specialty shops are dotted  through the hills and dales of northern Vinton County. All are clustered on or near State Route 93 so visitors can start at one end or the other and visit each shop in turn. Watch for signs.

Many will offer special discounts or product samples just right for your holiday planning and gifting. Each locations have directions to the next one. Start in the village of Mt. Pleasant just north of the St. Rts. 56 and 93 intersection with a visit to Nature’s Way for Native American and herbal products. Then go east on 56 about one mile to The Art Barn which crafts furniture from local woods, signs, walking sticks and rustic gifts.

Return to Rt. 93 and go south ¼ mile to Fiddlestix: a Celebration of Appalachia, where you’ll find four buildings chock full of quilts, candles, soaps, rag dolls and rugs, goodie mixes, primitive board games, country Christmas and much more. Lunch is available at The Red Cottage, and so are homemade sweets such as cookies, fudge, and the shop’s trademark “Fiddlestix,” chocolate covered pretzel sticks.  While there, be sure to take a “stitch-in-time” or more in the special quilt to be donated to the local Relay for Life effort to benefit cancer research. Even in you think you don’t know how to stitch, the staff will be happy to show you!

From there, travel south about one-half mile to the Cox Covered Bridge on the corner of Woodgeard Road and admire the recent preservation efforts. Continue down this road to Phyllis’ Candles, Crafts and Summer Kitchen, full of antiques, gifts and collectibles. While there, scout out your holiday tree at Weaver’s Christmas Tree Farm. Follow more signs to the Wicker Cabin for country primitives, gifts, and crafts.

Retrace your route or ask directions by another scenic route back to St. Rt. 93 and Bethel Road in between the two Swan Schools. Go up the hill to Ravenwood Castle where you can have lunch at the Welsh-English inspired Coach House Tea Room and shop at the Castle gift shop and The Celtic Raven. As you exit down the hill back to Bethel Road, make the sharp turn to the right and go up the hill to Glen and Merline Maynard’s Studio.  Glen is an award-winning master wood carver (one of his specialties is delightful Santa ornaments) and Merline is a renowned basket maker.

Make your way back to Rt. 93 and travel south a few miles, stopping at the Flea Market on the left and then to Welcome Home Floral and Gifts a few miles more on the right.

When you arrive at McArthur’s only stop light, find a parking place nearby, perhaps in front of Vinton County Floral or behind the bank. While there be sure to visit Remember When Antiques and Gifts.  On the second block, stop at Rycon Radical Closet. There are several places to eat in downtown McArthur. Then head south on 93 again about ½ mile to Little Extras for folk art and collectibles.

Visitors coming from the south can begin their Shop Hop in McArthur and wend their way north on St. Rt. 93. Each location will give you directions to the next one. No matter which direction you travel, you’ll be amazed at the variety of unique talents, attractions and gift items available in Vinton County!

Unique lodging, covered bridges and miles of parks and forests make Vinton County an extra special place to visit. Once a huge part of the iron producing industry, the only remaining reflections of this past are a handful of iron furnace remnants, an allegedly haunted train tunnel and a few ghost towns nearly hidden beneath the tall grass. Instead of urban sprawl of the mid-1800's, the region has transformed itself over the last 150 years into a wonderland of outdoor recreation. There are over 70 miles of public trails for hiking, horseback riding and backpacking. There are beaches, gift shops, small towns and covered bridges. It's a place just off the beaten path of both time and highway. It's Vinton County, Ohio.
